Saving People, Places & Memories of the Past

Right, this is an odd question...probably. :)

Please can you recommend medieval event websites/ renfaire events, from or used in the UK because that is where we are (USA-only sites are no use!) where we may be able to list a medieval show?

I'll explain some background so that you hopefully see what I mean with regard to relevance.

Basically, I am secretary and publicist for a small non-profit community theatre company which specialises in newly written/ researched work about the history and legends of our local area. Now we have a huge (our biggest ever) medieval show coming up in January, this isn't a standard theatre show - as in, the actors on a stage and the audience sat in an auditorium. Instead, we have set our show up like a medieval hall, where all the action takes place, with the drama, plus live medieval music, mummers, dancers, gymnasts, and a Royal visit, taking place as part of the show, with the audience being seated as they would have been in a medieval hall as guests. The story is, in fact, a true story.

So, aside from the usual - events websites, theatre websites, local papers and radio, our social networks, posters in local shops, etc etc, we are looking for websites related to things medieval, where we could also post up a link to, or ad for the shows.
Thanks ever so much for any recommendations. :)

A must see if you are ever in eastern Colorado! [Jul. 14th, 2007|08:17 pm]

The World's Wonder Tower in Genoa, Colorado is amazingly fabulous! It was first built as a highway stop in 1926, and it's still FANTASTIC today!

I think it should count as a Rural Ruin because when the original owner died in 1942, it was closed and left to continue moldering away. (The moldering had started when new highways bypassed the original road that it had been built on, taking away the tourist trade.) But it's open again, and FULL of cool relics.

If you want to see more, you can take a virtual mini-tour here. (42 pics on 2 pages)

Over the past few days, I have been really upset. The idea of my aunt dying is really taking a toll on my daily life. Not that I want anything to happen to someone else, but my aunt happens to be my favorite relative. What upsets me even more is what my father said the other day. The man cannot come to grips with reality. Everything just somehow always relates to God. His sister is dying and he can still manage to say it is the will of God. Just writing this down almost brings me to tears. I am really confused.

Aunt Lizzie has lung cancer. Grampa said the prognosis is not good. I am still in shock just as much as I was last night. Who would have thought a 38 year old could get lung cancer? She doesn’t even smoke. How is that even possible? I feel so bad for her and my cousins.

Last night, Katlyn and I went to the city to get some Italian food. I cannot even remember the last time I went to an upscale restaurant. Usually I would prefer Japanese food, especially sushi, but Katlyn seems to be a big fan of Italian. I could tell how much she loved Italian food by the way she could pronounce everything on the menu.

Today, after my morning classes, I had lunch with Katlyn again. Having lunch together has become routine now. While eating, we spoke about how boring our professor is. I would think that a class like psychology would be interesting, but some how my professor still manages to make me want to kill myself.

Yesterday, Katlyn and I spent the whole day together. She said she wanted to do something different, so I decided to take her to a driving range. Not only was it a way for us to try something new, but it also let me whack a couple of balls. The driving range helped me get rid of some extra aggression and tension. The only problem was I couldn't hit the damn things. Half the time, my swing would miss everything except the air. Katlyn was just as bad. Most of the time, we would look up at each other and simply laugh at our futile attempts to drive the balls. Now I know for the next time not to buy the jumbo bucket of balls, it is way too many.

I seriously have the worst luck ever. On Sunday night, I began to feel very ill. I got a whole bunch of phone calls at 12am from friends and Katlyn wishing me a Happy Birthday. Little did I know, my illness was going to become a horrible fever. On Monday, my birthday, I woke up feeling the same.. I felt like complete shit. That is exactly how things work for me, on my birthday, I get sick. I have to laugh at the irony.

Today was another great day with Katlyn. During the entire psych class we passed notes to each other. It reminded me of when I was young, like the children in elementary school and the way they pass their little love letters. It was hard to concentrate in class because every time we passed a note, our hands would touch momentarily and she’d look at me and smile. I can’t help but to smile back. Her eyes are so beautiful and her smile is stunning. She really blows me away. I still have no clue what the lecture was about, but it is still my best class for the simple reason that she is there with me.

Today I woke up with the biggest hangover. Last night I went to a party thrown by some of Aaron’s friends. It was a really good time. I tried hard to stay away from hard liquor because of my last couple of experiences which ended with me throwing up on everyone and everything. So this time I decided to just sit back and drink a few beers. I still got wrecked, but I guess it worked because I managed to keep my stomach contents inside of me.

I got into another fight with my father today. He saw that I was reading his bible and got excited. I guess he thought I was reading for some sort of spiritual purpose. In a way he was correct, but it wasn’t the spiritual sense he was hoping for. I started asking him some questions about the thoughts and questions I had about his religion. I could immediately sense the tension just by looking at his eyes. It is impossible to speak to the man. Especially about these matters.

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge [Sep. 4th, 2006|01:29 pm]

You talk about a project where someone has saved the past! This railroad started in 1881 -- the history of the thing is amazing and volumous. Most of the other railroads in the area were demolished over the years, and this one came THAT close, but it is full up and running today, with some of the last steam engines of certain types in the world working away and being lovingly cared for.

I have the whole trip spread out over seven pages. Some of it is ruins, some scenery, some just personal shots I thought were amusing enough to share. The locations we hit are Trinidad, the Highway of Legends, Great Sand Dunes, an alligator farm near Alamosa, our ride on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railway plus a tour of their train yard (some good relics shots in there), and the Royal Gorge.

My father once told me, “Have faith in your own religion.” Is it really my religion? How did I choose it? Do I really have a choice? How do we know which religion is right? How does God make his decision about who goes to heaven and hell?

Today I hung out with John and once again I brought up the religion thing. I believe I came up with one of my best arguments yet. My argument to him was pretty much the questions I asked above. I asked John, "what if I was born Muslim or Jewish? What if it was all I knew from my birth? What if my parents raised me to follow the strict rules of a religion?" I know that in many religions, in order to be accepted by its God or Gods, you must be a follower, a believer and obey certain laws. You must follow the writings in some ancient texts, most of which have been rewritten or revised countless times. How do we know which one is right? How do we know any of them are right?

Today I went into my parents room to take my fathers bible. I wanted to get some examples of three things I had written yesterday. As soon as I opened the bible, I remembered the flood and Noah’s Ark. God actually used a flood to destroy all the evil on Earth at the time. He believed the world had become too corrupt and thought by destroying the world with floods, the world could begin again. That is a prime example of people personifying God.

So it seems like everything in the house is finally starting to cool down. Yesterday, my father actually spoke to me a little bit. He asked me if I registered for my fall courses yet. So it kind of broke the ice between us. I am just happy that he actually said something to me.

Today I hung out at Johns’ house. We had a deep conversation about my father and his obsession with religion. I basically told him exactly why I can not deal with religion, and how bogus I truly think it is. I seriously could write a book on all the reasons why I believe it to be fake. I’ve made a promise to myself that my next hobby I will concentrate on things other than “the bitch.” After everything she put me through, I still miss and adore her.

It has been a while since I’ve had any time to write. I have been living between John and Mikes’ homes. Things got real sour between my father and I. A couple of days back, we got into the same usual fight that seems to occur everyday, him saying that I have been staying out too much and that I am losing control of my life. It is easy for him to say because he has no clue how it truly feels to be in my position. On top of everything, all he ever says to me is how important it is to have God in my heart and in my life. This is the exact kind of shit I really do not want to hear. It has gotten so repetitive that I ended up losing my nerve in front of him. This time the fight got out of hand.

Amache Japanese Internment Camp [Aug. 24th, 2006|11:02 pm]

I have a personal project challenge going, which is to post two new photo essay entries to my photo essay page every week. I have TONS of picture sets just sitting here on my hard drive, and I hope making a public commitment will help me get on the stick and do something with them!

This week I cheated a little by fixing up one I had done a couple of years ago. On the way back from one of my son's orthodontist appointments, we had stopped in Granada (Colorado) at the site of Amache, the old Japanese internment camp. It's a small page, only 6 photos. I'm hoping I can add to it one of these days, since some groups are trying to get a museum going there.

My dad is driving me up the wall. It has come to the point where I don’t even want to be home anymore. I have been spending my time out of the house with my friends. It’s actually making things worse between me and him, but at the same time it is helping me avoid a confrontation. I honestly don’t care anymore. Ever since Lisa and I separated, I really don’t care about anything. I have been spending a lot of my time doing two things: thinking or getting wasted.

I have been fighting with my parents non-stop. They are constantly on my ass. My dad keeps complaining. He says that I have been going out way too much. He acts like im a kid. Pisses me off so much. It is so embarrassing. A soon to be sophomore who is constantly bothered by his folks. No wonder I hate living in my house.
